Acacia concinna: English: Shikakai.Acacia; Hindi: Shikaki

Part Used: Leaves and Fruits.

Description: A scandent spreading spiny shrub, branches are slender and long; sub

branches are creamish white with five rows of curved spines. Leaves

abod fleshy, beaked and constricted.

Used in: Chronic Cough, asthmetic obstruction, Jaundic, Lice and Dendriff, Alopecia.

Acorus calamus: English: Sweet Flag; Hindi: Bach ( ugraghand)

Part used: Rhizome.

Description: A small aquatic or marshy herb, with tuberous fleshy, creeping, aromatic

cylinctrical rhizonal leaves linear strap shaped, thiclcened on vains.

Used in: Dyspepsia, Colie, Remittant fever, Caused depression in blood pressure

epilepsy bronchilis and Respiration, Cough, Throat disorder, Chronic

diarrhoea, flatulence and calculi; It is a nerve tonic, Musclerelaxent and

Adhatoda Vasica: English Malabarnut; Hindi: Arusa

Part Used: Whole plant, leaves, Flowers and Root bark.

Description: A much branched evergreen shrub, 4 to 8 feet high, Leaves elliptie opposite

simple; entire pointed at both ends, with white flowers, bracts and bracteoles.

Used in: Cough, chronic bronchitis, Asthma, Rheumatism, Respiratory disorder,

Antipyretic, Antituberculosis, Spasrmolyte; gonorrhoea,

jaundice, ophthalmia.

Allium sativum: English: Garlic; Hindi: Lahsun

Part Used: Bulb and Leaves

Description: A small herb with half tunicated bulb; leaves flat linear grasslike; Flowers

white on a globose umbel. Its Bulb contains- A voltile oil which contains

Allyldisulphide, Allyl-propy disulphide and Ploy sulphide, Allicin.

Used in: Malarial fever, Flatulance, Epilepsy, Tuberculosis, Ulcer, Ear troubles,


Aloe barbadensis: English: Barbados Aloe; Hindi: Ghee Kuar / Gwarpatha

Part Used: Whole plant; Dried juice and Pulp of Leaves.

Description: A small herb with stolon, fleshy and redical leaves, flowers pinkish red

on long scape.

Used in: The pulp is used to cure piles, Rectalfissures, Cough, cold, Rheumatism,

constipa;tion fevers, Colie, Menstrual disorder. It is also stomachic.


Azadirachta indica: English: Margosa tree; Hindi: Neem

Part used: whole plant

Description: A large tree, flowers creamish-white and aromatic. Neem leaf is bitter in taste.

Used in: Right from its leaf to root everything is having a medicinal values and

properties. Blood purification; Antiseptic; Anti bacterial; Anti ulcer.

Bacopa monieri: English: Bacopa; Hindi: Jalneem

Part Used: whole plant

Description: A small succulent herb creeping, rooting at nodes, aquatic with purpleblue

flower. Taste – Bitter.

Used in: Dyspepsia, Cough, fever, Insomnia, Bloodpurifier, Less memory, Tension.

Cassia Occidentallis : English : The Negro coffee; Hindi – Kasondi ( KASMARD)

Part used: Whole plant, root, stem; leaves and fruits.

Description: A large woody herb, offensive odorous, 3-6 feet high, Compound leaves,

dark green, leaflets oposite, ovate-oblong or lanceolate acuminate. Yellow

flowers, pod flate, faleate, explate between seed.

Used in: Cough, increase digestive power, clears throat obstruction and decoction of

Root bark in: Diysuria and inflammation. Seeds are used in skin disorder.

Cassia fistula: English: Indian Labumum/Riding Pipe tree; Purging cassia; Hindi:Amaltas

Part Used: Fruits and Leaves

Description: A medium sized tree, large compound leaves with 4 to 8 pairs of leaflets.

Fruits 35 to 60 cm long and 18-25 mm diameter, nearly straight and

subcylindrical, chocolate-brown to almost black in color.

Used in: Juice of leaves cures Ringworms, Facial paralysis, Rheumatism. Fleshy part

of the fruit is very useful in constipation, flatulence, skin & heart diseases.

Carum Copticum : English: The Bishop's weed / Ajova Seeds; Hindi: Parseek Ajwain

Part Used: Leaves and Fruits.

Description: Annual aromatic, herb, 1-3 feet high, pinnatetype dissected leaves; Flowers

white and in umbels.

Used in: Diarrhoea, Indigestion abdominal pain, flatulence, Cholera, Rheumatism,

heart disease, spleeno-megally, spermatorrheal and gives colic releif.

Cinnamomum tamala:English: Tamala tree; Hindi: Tamal / Tejpata

Part Used: Leaves

Description: A medium sized, evergreen, scented, about 25 feet high, flowers yellowish in

panicles. Taste – Sweet aromatic.

Used in: Cough, Asthma, abdominal disorder, diarrhoea, Indigestion.

Curculigo Orcguiudes: English:Black Musale, Hindi: Kalimusli

Part Used: Rhizom and Roots.

Description A small herb with stout root stock and fleshy root at bare, leaves linear

lanceolate, sheathing 3 -16 inch. Long flowers yellow, on escape; capsule

4 seeded.

Used in: Piles, Diarrhoea, Gonorrhoea, Sexual debility, Jaundice, Colie, Disuria,

polyurea, menorrhagia, leucorrhoea, leucoderma.

Curcuma domestica: English: Turmeric; Hindi: Haldi

Description Tall herb about 2-3 feet high with fleshy rhizomes of yellow-orange

color inside, tubers thick, cylindric, leaf large; long petioled; flowers in

compound spikes, covered by enlarged bracts, yellow.

Cholorophytum tuberosum : English: White Musale; Hindi: Safed Musli

Part Used: Fleshy Roots and Tubers.

Description: A small herb becomes cons picuous after rainy season; when it flowers.

Roots contains steroids, Resin, Phenolics, Tannins, Calcium, Potassium.

Used in: Diarrhoea, leucorrhoea, Dysentery, Gonorrhoea, Seminal debility and

General debility.

Cyperus rotundus: English: Nutgrass; Hindi: Nagarmotha

Description: A perennial glabrous herbaceous sedge, leaves arise from under ground

rhizome. It contains essential oil which contains: Penene, cineol;

Used in: Dyspepsia, Sprue, skin disease, Diarrhoea, Thirst, Fever, Promote hair growth

Wound healer, diarrhoea, epilepsy, caliculi.

Glyeyrrhiza glabra: English: Liquoric Hindi: Mulethi

Part used: Root, Under ground stem, Leaves.

Description: A perennial small spreading shrub with pinnate compound leaves, purple

flowers. It is more sweeter then sugar.

Used in: Cough, vomiting, wound healing, aphrodisiac, Blood purifying, Skin

disease, Heart disease, Epilepsy, gastralgia, retention of urine.

Jasminum sambac: English: Arabian Jasmine Hindi: Mogra

Part Used: Whole plant, flowers, Leaves and Roots.

Description: A scandent shrub, young shoots are pubescent, leaves simple, Flowers

white and scented.

Used in: Essential Oil of flowers is useful in ear, nose and mouth. Externally applied

on breast abscess.

Jatropha curcus: English: Physic-nut / Purgingnut Hindi: Baghrenda; Ratanjot

Part Used: Root bark, Leaves, Stem, seed and Latex

Description: A large glabrous shrub, 10-12 feet high with milky latex; Leaves palmately

loked, entire, brodly ovate, flowers in loose panicle, yellowish green fruit-

ovoid, 4cmm; 3 carpelled.

Used in: Latex: lactagogue, styptic, seedoil; applied externally on chronic Rheumatism

skin disease, Root bark: applied in Rheumatism, useful in inflammation,

cough, dyscrasia, swellings, Tuberculosis; Twig used as Datun for swelling

gums, chronic dysentery, thirst, biliousness, anemia, fistula, ulcer.

Lawsonia inemis: English: Heena plant; Hindi: Mehandi

Part Used: Leaves, Flowers and Fruits.

Description: A much branched glabrous shrub or small tree with greenish brown bark;

branches are square leaves small, elliptic or broadly lanceolote contains

orange yellow dye, flower white and fragrant.

Used in: Headache, Lumbago, Hemicrania, Bronchitis, Ulcers, Stomatitis, Scrbies,

Disease of Spleen, Favours growth of hairs; also useful in Leucoderma and

Cough, leprosy, various skin diseases.

Mentha piperata: English: Peppermint; Hindi: Piparmint

Part used: Whole plant and leaves

Description: A perennial aromatic herb, prostrating with suckesrs, flowers bluish white.

Used in: Flatulance, Vomiting, Toothache, Rheumatism, Nervepain, headache,

Cough, Paralysis, Hysteria. The plant contains Essential Oil ( Peppermint

oil) ;Menthol.

Momordica charantia:English: Bitter Gound; Hindi” Karela

Part used: Roots; Leaves; Fruits and Seeds.

Description: A week stemed tendril climber covered with soft hairs, leaves palmatisect;

Flowers bright yellow. Taste – Bitter. The plant contains Aromatic E.O.

Used in: Diabetes, piles, Asthma, Cough, Arthritis, Colculus in urinary track,

Inflammation, Fever, Liver and spleen disease, Leprosy, Skin disease.

Oxalis Corniculata: English: Indian sorrel; Hindi: Tinpatiya

Part used: Whole plant and Leaves

Description: A small pubescent, perennial herb, leaves trifoliate with long rachis, leaflets

obcordate, sessile. Flowers: yellow solitary or grouped in 2-6 capsule oblong.

Used in: Scurvy, Menstrual disorder, helps in fertility, Anti-inflammotary, useful in

Diarrhoea Piles and Fever.

Terminalia belerica: English: Beleric Myrobalans/Beddanut; Hindi: Bahera

Part Used: Fruits

Description: A large deciduous tree with bluish or ashy-grey bark, leaves crowded at

the end of the branches, flowers on 2-3 inch long spikes, fruit- brown globose

Used in: Cough, Asthma, Anorexia, Vomiting, Arthritis, General debility. Throat

disorder, Fever, Epilepsy, Piles, Diarrhoea, Leprosy, Brain tonic, insomnia.

Trichosanthes dioica:English: Sespadula; Hindi: Parwal

Part Used: Fruits and whole plant

Description: Perennial dioecious climber, leaves cordate ovate acute sinuate dentate,

flowers white, fruit smooth spherical, oblong green streaked, obtuse at both

end. Its roots contains – saponin, essential oil and oils.

Used in: Fruits- Jaundice, Blooddisorder, Leprosy, Pruitus, alopecia chronic fever

Seeds are anthelmintie, antipyretic, stomachie.

Terminalia chebula: English: Chebulie Myrobalans; Hindi: Harar

Part Used: Fruit

Description: A large deciduous tree with dark brown bark, young parts covered with rusty

hairs, leaves are rough; flowers small creamish yellow; fruit- ellipsoid.

Used in: Constipation, Cough, Haemorrhoid, Skin disease, Asthma, Dysentery,

Uterine debility, Anaemia, Headache, Diabetese, Leaucoderma.

Sapindus trifoliatus: English: Soapnut tree; Hindi: Reetha

Part Used: Fruits

Description: A medium sized tree, leaves pinnate compound, leaflets 2-3 pairs, Fruits

berry fleshy.

Used in: Migrain, Lice, Dandriff, Abscess, Carbuncle, Cough, Asthma, Skin diseases

Leprosy, Pruties, Arthritis, Insect-bite, Scorpion and Honey bee sting.

Withania somnifera Dunal: English: Rape seed Plant /Winter Cherry; Hindi: Asgandh

Part Used: Root

Description: A perennial shrub about 3-4 feet high branches. It is found in waste land,

cultivated fields and open grounds throughout India. Its roots are collected

in winter, washed and cut into short pieces.

Used in: Painful swelling, Ulcer, Carbuncles, Neurological disorder, Respiatory

system, Cardiovascular system, Gastric activity.

Zingiber officinale: English: Zinger ; Hindi; Adrak

Part Used: Rhizome

Description: A small herb with horizontal, fleshy rhizome, reaching up to 90 cm in height,

widely cultivated in India. Rhizomes are dug in January-February.

Used in: Joint problems, Rheumatism, Gout, Chronic Arthritis, Muscular troubles,

Asthma, Cough, Chronic bronchitis, Increases longivity of life, Immunity

against diseases.



 

BARBADOS ALOE - Aloe barbadensis, Mill. LILIACEAE

Barbados Aloe, or Alovera, in Hindi - Gwarpatha / Ghee Kuar - a perennial herbs with stolon, fleshy and radical leaves, flowers pinkish red and long scape is cultivated throughout India. The plant is drought resistant, hence only need watering in summer at long interval of 25 to 30 days. Crop period eight months fresh leaves are removed manually. Aloe plantation gives commercial yield from second year and upto five years.

Parts used:
Expressed and dried juice of leaves and pulp;
Flowers and fruits at the end of the winter season

Alovera, has been used in both Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine. It is effective as an antiseptic, germicidal and blood purifier. It acts as a soothing agent in skin irritation. The pulp is used to cure piles, cough, cold, rheumatism, constipation, fever, colic and menstrual disorders. It is also a good stomachic, Anthelminite, Hepatoprotective. Beauticians use it in skin herbal preparations.

BASIL : Ocimum basilicum

BASIL. Ocimum basilicum Sweet Basil: in Hindi - Tulsi - Basil in Greek means 'Kingly Herb'. Ocimum is derived from the Greek word meaning 'to smell'. It is an aromatic pubescent herb, cultivated in pots in most of the Indian houses. It can be grown in wide ranges of soil like light loam and medium loam having good water holding capacity. The crop has a wide adaptability and can be grown successfully in tropical conditions. Crop duration 3 to 4 months. There are many varieties/species of basil which are available such as Ocimum graticimum and Ocimum sanctum which are also grown by the cultivators.

Basil has been traditionally used in China and India for many centuries as a medicinal herb. In India it is considered to be sacred plant used to garland Lord Krishna and Lord Vishnu, and is said to be the protecting spirit of the family. In Italy the leaves are seen as a symbol of love because of the heart shape of the leaves.


Basil is good to use for Malarial fever, Tuberculosis, Diabetes, Asthma, Urino-genital disease. Basil oil is refreshing, stimulating and is an excellent nerve tonic. It is used traditionally as a remedy for chest infections, digestive problems, headaches and migraines. It is also a good insect repellent.

LEMONGRASS: Cymbopogon citratus

Lemongrass is a perennial aromatic grass, which yields essential oil having lemony odour due to high citral content (75 -85%) in its oil. The crop grows to a height of 2-2.5 mtrs. with dark green or yellowish green leaves. The oil is present in the leaf tissues. Leamongrass is a very hardy crop. It grows best in well drained sandy loam and medium loam soils having good water holding capacity. It can also be grown in soil with poor fertility, marginal and sub-marginal land. It grows best in warm and humid climate with bright sun shine and well distribution of rainfall through out the year. In a year 4 - 5 harvests can be obtained. Steam distillation is more common among the growers.

Lemongrass oil is used in traditional Indian medicine for infectious diseases and to reduce fevers. It is also used as an insect repellent and as an ingredient to help protect animals from fleas and ticks. Use in low dosages. Can be irritating to sensitive skin.

MINT ---( Mentha arvensis )

It is also know as Japanese Mint (Mentha arvensis) is an aromatic plant of the Labiatae family. It is a perennial sub-shrub growing up to a height of 70-80 cms with many branches which are green or purple in color. Leaves are opposite, lanceolate and up to 10 cm. Length and 3 – 4 cm. Wide when fully developed. The plant is developed through gestative means called as stolons/suckers. It is an underground part of the plant.

Different cropping systems are being used by growers in different regions of India, depending upon climatic variation. Usually, paddy-potato-mint, paddy-mint, paddy-mustard-mint and ocimum-potato-mint cropping systems are most common among growers. After the development of the Kosi variety the paddy-wheat-mint is also a common crop-rotation among the farmers.

The crop becomes ready within 100 - 120 days of first harvest and 60 - 80 days for subsequent harvest. Two harvests are being taken by majority of the growers in mint growing regions. It oil is obtained through steam distillation. Its quality - A cooling and invigorating oil, which has a warming effect.

Its a good ingredient in toothpaste and cosmetics, as well as in cough, cold and digestive remedies. It should not be used excessively. Mint should not be used if you are on homeopathic treatment.
